What do you read a blog for?
I happen to agree with Fred on Roberts, but what caught my eye about the post is the comment:
“Not what I read this blog for.”
I’ve seen this comment scattered around a lot of places, and it always surprises me. Granted, it’s feedback, but what it’s essentially saying is: “I’m not interested in this. Why did you bother to post it?”
Well, because it’s his blog. And chances are, it’s interesting to some other people as well.
Feedback is very important in the blogosphere, and I strongly believe that writing posts your audience is interested in is going to be the best way to create and keep an audience.
But above all else, a blog is a personal publishing platform. It’s your face on the internet. Some people won’t like your face. Some people won’t like your nose. But it’s your face, so fuck it, put it all up there.
And given that understanding, I think blog readers need to become more generous. When you read a blog, you’re getting a whole person. And if some of their posts aren’t up your alley—let them slide.
If you like someone, you don’t need to tell them their nose is ugly.
