Terrorism

Fred Wilson, in his post Iraq and Terror, asks:

Are we safer or in more danger because of our war in Iraq?

Personally, I think that while that’s the question that has been on America’s mind for ages, and while it is an important question, it also betrays the way in which America operates.

Fred also says:

I saw this in the Wall Street Journal this morning:

Bush accused Islamic militants of seeking to “enslave whole nations” and charged they have made Iraq their main front.

Yup, they have made Iraq their main front.

But we made that happen. We invaded Iraq and made it a war zone. And now it is the center of global terror.

So what we have done is created a global war zone for terrorism in someone else’s country (purportedly to help the people of that country), and hope that it will keep terrorism farther from our own borders.

Theferrett also remarked about the US view of terrorism in a recent post:

But because, you know, we’re Americans, nothing’s really a problem until it affects us. The minute that our turf got hit, suddenly terrorism was the biggest problem in the whole wide world.
