Serenity

I went into town and saw Serenity today.

It was a pretty good movie, overall. I’m generally a fan of Science Fiction, and I think you’d have to be a fan for this movie to really work for you. There’s a lot of focus on the characters, which is good, but there’s a fair amount of campy dialogue and focus on technology which would probably deter the casual viewer.

I remember thinking during the movie about how most science fiction paints space as “the final frontier,” and as a result most of them depict an oddly circular society. You get “spaceports” where shoot-outs can happen, and the general feeling that it’s all a western in disguise. Suddenly the universe is too big for The Law, and anyways, The Law is always the bad guy.

Spaceships and crews are mini-gangs, and everyone carries a sidearm. There must be something inherently appealing with that image, that it crops up so often. Master of your own destiny.

I can’t see that happening in real life though. I’d dearly like to make a Sci-Fi film with my own ideas. The problem would be the story though. I can never stick to one thing long enough to actually create a story.

There were also several hilarious commercials before the movie, but I can’t find any of them online yet. When I do, I’ll post them here.
