Adventures in writing

I’ve been working slowly on a short story for the past couple of months. I’m not quite halfway done with it, and yes, it is short.

But at the same time, I feel really good about my prospects of finishing it, which would mark a real milestone in my “writing career.” It’s been a process of writing, re-writing, editing, deleting, re-writing, and more. The key seems to be getting something on paper in the first place, and then refining it a million times over until I’m happy with it. Which I’m not yet. But hopefully I’ll get there.

The other really interesting thing is that it’s kind of adventuresome. I’ve got the main outline of the story in my head, I know what the ending is, I know the main points, but it isn’t until I’m writing that I figure out how we get there. It’s as if I sit down at the keyboard to find out what my characters are going to do. I wonder if many writers do that.
