Don't get stuck
So many blogs can be summed up in small characterizations.
Pick any really popular blogger, and there are certain aspects of the way the write, what they write about, how often they write, their opinions, tendancies, or idiosyncracies that occur or match up with almost every post.
Jeff Jarvis writes about how big media sucks but he can help them if they just pay him a little.
Jason Calacanis writes about how blogs kick ass and how cool he is and how much better he understands things than everyone else in the business.
Fred Wilson writes about how his investments are cool and how closing things off is a bad idea.
TheFerrett writes about social issues and daily events in ways that make everything a profound metaphor for something important.
Scott Adams will sacrifice everything, including his dignity, for a laugh.
While part of me wants to avoid this type of “oh, every post he writes is like…” writing. I want to be spontaneous, odd, informative, funny, or creative in every post. I’d like the reader to open the page every day without really knowing what’s there, except that it’ll be interesting.
On the other hand, I feel like that groove is part of the appeal in a good blog. If you know what to expect, it will keep bringing you back.
I guess it just feels vaguely insulting to have everything you write summed up into a sentence or two.
