A day behind The Times

Actually, two days. And I’m behind the New York Times in this case:

Hey, baby Bells: Information Still Wants to be Free

I spotted the link to this articles on Tom Evslin’s post (yes, I know, I should spend more time reading newspapers and less time reading blogs), but this is a case where Tom has been talking about something for some time and the NYT seems to have picked up the vibe.

The basic run-down is that I don’t really understand what’s going on. But as far as I can tell, broadband access in the US (on the west coast in particular) is getting choked hardcore. Our pay/speed ratio is completely out of whack, espeically compared to other countries.

I always wondered about how Sussex, which in every other way had terrible internet access and networking setup, never seemed to run out of bandwidth. I wondered how a school that coulnd’t always afford to replace broken shower heads and light bulbs found money to pipe in enough bandwidth for 500 skypers to simultaneously leave me room to download WoW videos at over 100 k/second.

Now I know. And I want it here, too!

ps. See? Clever title!
