The Blog Savvy
One of the main reasons I spend so much time blogging is that I want to get better at it.
It seems like kind of a redundant goal - but this has been fun (so far), and more importantly, I do think that I’ve been getting better at it. More people are reading me than were almost a year ago when I installed Wordpress, and I think I’ve found a more consistent voice.
Generally, I’d say I’m OK at blogging.
But there are tons of people who are better at it than me. My co-worker Teresa, for example, produces a plethora of good content not only for her own blog, but for the Blog Business Summit and InFlightHQ as well. That’s just one. Anyone who blogs high-profile at Weblogs Inc. or Gawker has got me beat. Fred Wilson’s got me beat (duh).
This all wandered through my brain while I was reading this post by Mike Rundle. And I think I’ve figured out the real secret: have interesting opinions.
What gets me about his post is that it’s a very well chosen subject. I’ve decided that’s at least 80% of a good post. Punctiation, grammar, and even vocabulary are basically less important than what you’re writing about.
That’s both depressing and encouraging. It means I can suck as a writer and still blog well, but it also means that good writing is definitely on it’s way down the proverbial toilet.
