HD-DVD player for $200 - on condition
I agree with Fred Wilson - I think computers are going to be sitting next to TV’s int he future, not TiVos or other big-company owned and controlled media devices.
Part of this is because it’s easier to control your media when you have a computer instead of some crazy corporate-controlled box by your TV. TiVo uses its own format. DVRs from cable and satellite companies are even more cryptic. They try to lock you in.
The other part is simple usability. For example, Microsoft released their HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 just recently ($200), and it didn’t take long for people to figure out how to plug that HD-DVD player into a computer (Mac or PC) and get it working - although there is no HD-DVD software for OSX just yet.
So now, if you have a media center next to your TV (like the ones we build at Digital Clicker) instead of a DVR, you can add an HD-DVD player to your home theater system for a fraction of the cost of a stand alone player.
