Initial thoughts on the PS3
[Image: ps3]As if there weren’t enough distractions lying around my place already, I walked into Best Buy on New Years Eve to find a gigantic stack of PS3s in my face. Being opportunists as we are, my family promptly nabbed one for the household.
Unfortunately, every store in town is sold out of both the component cables for the system (so I have yet to see it in HD) and controllers (single player only, at this point). I’m waiting until we get the cables so I can check out Black Hawk Down on Blu-Ray which I picked up when I got the console.
Side note: the movies available on HD-DVD are far better than the movies available on Blu-Ray. I should look into getting the extension for the 360.
Resistance: Fall of Man has been a bit fun to play so far. The general consensus seems to be that it is the game most worth getting right now for the PS3, and if that’s the case, the PS3 needs some new games, STAT.
Maybe my opinion will change once I start playing in HD, but I kind of doubt it. The game is solid enough, and it *might* be worth the $60 it costs, but it’s no Gears of War.
The plot is kind of cool, put poorly explained. There’s no health packs for the first two levels, and they don’t really explain that, so I spent at least a half hour looking for any kind of health pack when they didn’t exist at all. There are a few other minor issues - controls are sometimes funky, and the lack of a compass is annoying when they’re telling you to “go north.”
The PS3 itself seems pretty simple to get going. I got it wirelessly hooked up to the internet (same process as the PSP) and downloaded an update, etc. I was going to sign up for the online service, but I couldn’t figure out how to get past the license agreement without scrolling for literally five minutes, so I gave up.
Overall, the PS3 is “kinda cool” but not worth $600. Not yet.
