Griffith Park Fire looks crazy

I’ve been watching the plume of smoke feel its way along the sky today, turning everything orange in the afternoon and fading to a dismal glow at night. It’s kind of cool, but very creepy.

I hope it doesn’t destroy the brand new multi-million dollar observatory that they just finished building a few months ago. The structure has been under construction since I got here four years ago, and just recently opened to mediocre reviews from the LA Times.

I heard a rumor that the fire was arson. If it was, I’d hate to be the guy who burned down the observatory. He just made himself numero uno on the hit list for a group of very very smart scientists who spend every day looking methodically through innumerable and nearly indistinguishable points of light in the sky.

How hard can it be to find an arsonist? It doesn’t matter if it takes twenty years, these guys wait fifty for a comet to come back around.

There are a bunch of really cool shots here collected at the Times from people who submit their photos. I went up to the roof of my apartment with my little SD400, but I didn’t come up with anything as cool as these people did.

Regardless, this is what I can see from the top of my apartment:
