Sony (finally) drops the price on the PS3 trainwreck, decides to introduce a new expensive model "just in case"

Ok, so that’s not quite the way Sony phrased it, but according to the New York Times Sony has finally decided that $600 is way more than people are willing to spend for a console that has one decent game and looks like it belongs in a restaurant. They’re dropping it to $500.

Apparently the motivation is Microsoft’s recent widespread trouble with 360s breaking all over the place. I know the rumors are true because my friend Ethan’s xbox, already sent in for repairs once, has just busted again. Poor guy has to pay to send it in to Microsoft so that can give him something back that might work for more than 6 months at a time.

But the kicker? Sony’s not willing to give up on the $600 price tag altogether. The 60gb consoles are going to drop in price on Thursday, but soon (August) buyers will find the shelves chock-full of 80gb, $600 paperweights in their place. Why? Because nobody in their right mind would pay $100 for a 20gb hard drive.
