Finally reading Starship Troopers

[Image: starship troopers]I bought Starship Troopers about two months ago right after I finished reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. That was actually the first Heinlein book I’d ever read, despite the fact that I tend to like my Sci-Fi.

I know it’s hard to go so long without at least accidentally reading one of his best-sellers, but hey, it wasn’t so long ago that Tony hadn’t read Ender’s Game, either ;)

I started ST as we boarded the plane last night, and I plugged through a really ejoyable hundred pages before I had to get in a car (and put the book down - never could read in the car).

There’s an industrial quality to Heinlein’s writing, his vocabulary seems clunky but spot-on, as though he never got past the first draft but the first draft is perfect anyway. It’s fascinating. So far, I’d recommend it to anyone who thinks they might like it: you probably will.

Here’s an ironically (or perhaps appropriately) good quote:

Basic truths cannot change and once a man of insight expresss one of them it is never necessary, no matter how much the world changes, to reformulate them.

One thing about vacation is I’ll get plenty of time to catch up on my reading. Looking forward to it.
