Survey says Americans want government regulated games? Are we effing nuts?
According to The Escapist, a recent survey the PR consultancy Hill & Knowlton found that 51% of the people surveyed “believed the government should be regulating the actual content of the games.”
What?
Are we as a culture seriously that jaded? Censorship doesn’t bother us anymore? Please please please tell me that because videogames are a “new” medium, we want the all-powerful government to step in and legally dictate what can and cannot be included in them? The government has no right to do this, and never will.
I am constantly baffled at the American public’s ability to shut up and go along. Wire taps? no worries. No-fly list? no worries. Censorship? no worries.
What if the government started dictating what could and could not be printed in newspapers? Why is it any different for them to dictate what goes into videogames? What about the videogame industry gives the government purview over their product?
This just in: the people who answered this survey also want the government to approve the content of family photos, limit the number and colors of pets allowed in private homes, and arrest people who don’t brush their teeth twice daily.
