How Like.com Shut Down A Competitor–And Broke Up Its Funding Round

In general, I think the idea of patents is good. Many tech companies complain about patents in the tech space, and I agree that the system we currently have in place often seems to award patents erroneously.

But, I do think that patents (when properly awarded) can be a critical part of protecting your business, and based on the story about Like.com, I’m not feeling like this was an abuse of the patent system so much as just a great strategy from Like.com (with a little luck thrown in):

But Like.com had a patent on product applications of computer vision. Like.com, which was well-funded with $47 million in venture backing, filed a lawsuit against Modista the day before its funding was going to close.

Interesting read.
